Top Notch Golf Courses

By Aazdak Alisimo

A discussion of top notch golf courses is a lot different than a discussion of favorite golf courses. Although each golfer might have his own favorite, there are a few that have always stood out.

Anyone with a serious interest in golf will have heard of St. Andrews in Scotland. This is not only a Mecca for serious golfers, but is also where the game originated. St. Andrews is really a whole series of different world class courses that surround the town and run along the rugged Scottish coast near the town of St. Andrews. Although some of the courses are over 100 years old, there are some new and modern courses mixed in for variety. Despite year round play, these courses are among the best maintained in the World. It appears that the Scotch have the experience to do this job correctly. They are known for hosting the British Open.

The courses at St. Andrews are across an ocean which poses a slight disadvantage for the American golfer and many who make this journey are a bit shocked by the higher costs and green fees here. Most people are too blown away by the awesome scenery and the sense of golfing history to notice and the thrill of playing St. Andrews is rarely a disappointment.

The Augusta National Golf Club is another top notch course. It was designed and built in 1933 by golf legend Bobby Jones and has hosted the Masters Golf Tournament since 1934. It is a private club golf course that has been in the news recently for more than just the Master’s Tournament. There are only about 300 members. The membership fees range fro $250,000 to $500,000 a year and in its entire history no female has ever been a member. Although women are allowed to play the course as guests of members, they are restricted from membership. This caused a bit of a stink recently as the National Organization for Women put pressure on the club to change its policy.

Pebble Beach in California is like St. Andrews in Scotland. It is not just one golf course, but rather a series of top notch golf courses all in one location. Pebble Beach could be better called a golf destination than a course. There are seven public or private courses located at Pebble Beach. The Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of the public courses and is possibly the most top notch course in America. It is the one of only two courses in America to make the top of the “best courses” list in Golf Digest.

St. Andrews, Augusta, and Pebble Beach might be the most top notch golf courses in the World, although another writer might pick another for this list. In the end, the choice might be personal. The most top notch course in the world, to an individual, might be where they shot their first par or even where they first learned to play and love the game.

What You Can Expect On Your Jamaica Golf Vacation

By Dottson Bando

With the wide array of spectacular scenery and gorgeous weather, Jamaica golf is the perfect relaxation activity for your vacation. There are only about twelve courses to choose from but you’ll be kept entertained by the wide variety. The fact is, each course has distinctive qualities… and each course has its own unique character which will provide you with many memorable experiences.

Despite there being just twelve courses in the country of Jamaica, there is a wide range of experience level. It doesn’t matter what level you are… beginner or experienced… you’ll find a course to suit you. This way you can enjoy the links with a challenge to your level of expertise.

If you are an experienced golfer, one of the top Jamaica golf courses is The Tryall Club. Tryall is located just an hour west of Montego Bay, which is the perfect location for tourists looking for a challenge. This resort is a collection of upscale homes by North Americans and Europeans, giving it an up-scale feel. A visit to the course can be arranged through hotel concierges although it is a private resort area.

If you are a beginner and are looking to have a good time, the hub of Negril’s all-inclusive resorts is one of the most popular courses. Being a beginner, you can fit right in at Negril Hills Golf Club as most of the golfers are first timers or golfers that go no more than a couple of times a year. And the location gives you a rare and novel experience as you travel up and down the elevated trees to the valley fairways.

Head out to Sandals Golf and Country Club if you’re looking for a little less upscale but equally challenging course as The Tryall Club. You will find some of the best golf in Jamaica here with a plethora of quality and experienced golfers. Although it was in rough shape just a few years ago, Sandals was recently purchased and has been completely revamped.

If you want to get a taste of history while visiting Jamaica, Manchester Country Club is the Caribbean’s oldest golf course. Found in the city of Mandeville on Jamaica’s south coast, it is truly an experience you cannot miss out on. In addition, it is over 2,000 feet above sea level… and is set in rolling hills and provides gorgeous scenery.

Jamaica golf is a popular activity among tourists and natives. There is something for everyone… although there are only twelve courses. With gorgeous scenery, courses of all degrees of difficulty, and a chance to relax and enjoy your time under the sun, Jamaica golf is an activity you do not want to miss out on while vacationing.

A Guide To The Best Golf Vacations

By Ian Botham

If you love golf, a golf vacation might be something that you like to do on a regular basis. For the avid golfer, the thought of going on a golf vacation where you do nothing but golf is the idea of heaven. Here are a few things to consider before you take your next golf vacation.

First, it’s always good to go on vacation with people who share your love of golf. Most often a golf vacation turns into a buddy trip, but there’s really nothing wrong with that. But make sure that you pick a destination that everyone can agree on. Take a vote if you must, but be sure everyone wants to go to the same place and that everyone can afford it.

You will also want to take into consideration everyone’s playing abilities when you plan a golf vacation. Someone with a 3 handicap will enjoy a challenging course while a person with a 13 handicap will likely just get frustrated and mad on the same course.

As a general rule when planning a golf vacation, you should consider the courses first and the accommodations next. Resorts, especially those with quality golf courses, are expensive. But all in all, if golf is a main purpose or highlight of your trip, decide where you want to play first, and then decide on accommodations. You can take a golf vacation where you stay at a hotel to gain access to a course and then move to a less expensive hotel later. It’s an inconvenience to have to repack and move during the trip, but can be well worth it in order to play top courses while not spending the entire vacation at posh resort prices.

Even if you are staying at a resort hotel which gives you access to its courses, find out how far ahead of your arrival date you can book tee times. All courses have specific rules for when they will make tee times, which you should take note of and follow carefully.

Some courses even have specific times you must call to reserve your time (e.g., between 7 and 9 a.m. on the Thursday eight days before the weekend you wish to play), though most guidelines are usually more general (e.g., a week before you wish to play or up to sixty days ahead).

You should book as far as ahead as possible, especially for high demand courses. Even as a resort guest, if the course is popular, you may be out of luck if you wait until a few days before arrival or check-in time to get a tee time

Once you’ve embarked on your golf vacation and are ready to play the courses you’ve chosen, don’t just jump right in with the excitement that we know you feel. You must take time to get a feel for the course and stretch properly. Arrive at the course well before your tee time to avoid feeling rushed and look around. Check out the scorecard to see the layout of the course and perhaps talk to the course pro to see if he or she has any advice for you.

A golf vacation is a great way for the golfer to enjoy some of the best courses our country has to offer. So plan carefully and then get out there and have some fun.
